Scrimshaw and East Hampton Whaling: Artist’s Talk and Hands-on Workshop

During long whaling voyages, sailors would create scrimshaw by carving or engraving images onto whale teeth and bones. On October 16 at 5 PM, join us for a special program featuring artist Peter Spacek who will discuss the history of the artform and how he creates modern scrimshaw using repurposed media such as old surfboards. After he demonstrates his contemporary practice, participants will have the opportunity to make their own scrimshaw.  

The artists talk and workshop takes place in Clinton Academy where the Claus Hoie exhibition “Watercolors of Whaling” is currently on display.

The artist’s talk and workshop is free for members and $5 for non-members.
