SUMMARY:Land & Sea: Exhibit at Clinton Academy
DESCRIPTION:Presented in collaboration with the East Hampton Historical Farm Museum\, this exhibit about cartography and maritime navigation features early navigation tools\, maps\, and charts used by sailors from East Hampton and the South Fork to navigate the waters of the mid-Atlantic. Connecting past and present\, the exhibit is on display exactly where students enrolled in Clinton Academy during the late 18th and 19th centuries learned navigation\, surveying\, and seafaring. \nThe Land & Sea exhibit is co-curated by Stacy Myers\, Director of Education of the Historical Society and Prudence and Brian Carabine from the Farm Museum from the collections of both institutions. Among the highlights is a cross-staff. This celestial navigation instrument made its appearance in Europe in the 1300s and by the 1700s\, it had been fully developed for use at sea. The cross-staff was used for finding the latitude by measuring the altitude of the polar star and for measuring the altitude of the sun. To measure the altitude of a celestial body\, the eye-end of the staff was placed near the observer’s eye and the other end half way between the horizon and the celestial body. The vane was then slid along the staff until its upper edge appeared to touch the celestial body\, while the lower edge appeared to touch the horizon. The altitude could then be read off the staff. \nOn display in Clinton Academy at 151 Main Street in East Hampton through December 20\, Land & Sea is open Monday through Friday\, 10 AM to 3 PM. The exhibition is free to visit.

SUMMARY:Tour with the East Hampton Trails Preservation Society: Freetown
DESCRIPTION:Freetown was settled in the late 18th and 19th century by free people of African and Native American descent\, as well as people of European descent. Following the Emancipation Act of 1799\, John Lyon Gardiner and other slaveholders in East Hampton set aside parts of their landholdings in Freetown to rent or sell to newly emancipated African Americans. Stretching roughly from Cedar Street to Morris Park Lane\, the land was considered substandard for farming but close enough to East Hampton Village to provide a labor pool for wealthy residents. In the 19th century\, many Montauketts arrived in Freetown after being forced to leave Montauk when their land was dispossessed. \nWe’ll tour the area with Dr. Allison McGovern\, an anthropological archaeologist\, and make stops at the Fowler House\, Calvary Baptist Church\, the Neighborhood House\, and the original location of St. Matthew’s Chapel. The tour is co-presented by the East Hampton Historical Farm Museum\, the East Hampton Historical Society\, and the East Hampton Trails Preservation Society. \nMeet 10 AM at the East Hampton Historical Farm Museum\, 131 North Main Street\, East Hampton. \nFree for members of EH Trails\, EH Historical Society\, and EH Historical Farm Museum. $12 for Non-Members. Pre-registration required. \nRegister \nPhoto credit: Allison McGovern

The colony also includes what is now the Devon Yacht Club\, which was originally established as the Gardiners Bay Boat Club in 1908.  We’ll tour this area with Lucy Sachs\, a descendant and former resident of the Highlands.
